💡 Hertz Insider Tip: Benivan 120 – Water Tank Logistics & Remote Camping Strategy
“The Benivan 120’s 100-litre fresh water tank is Iceland’s best campsite planning tool.”
A full tank provides 2–3 days of standard self-contained use — covering cooking, washing up, and daily hygiene — giving you the flexibility to choose scenic, secluded campsites without mains water hookups while staying fully comfortable.
You can easily top up at fresh water fill points available across almost all established Ring Road campsites. The matching 100-litre wastewater tank can be drained just as simply at designated campsite disposal stations, which are typically situated alongside the fresh water refill points.
The Benivan 120 — What’s Included
Inside the motorhome
Benivan 120 – Sleeping, Bathroom, Kitchen & Living Space
Sleeps 3
Sleeping
The Benivan 120 sleeps 3 adults across two fixed beds:
Superior Bed: 140 × 186 cm — a proper double bed. The widest sleeping space in the vehicle and the main bed for couples.
Bottom Bed: 130 × 180 cm — a full single bed beneath the superior bed. Comfortable for one adult or a child.
Both beds are fixed — no assembling from seating. Bedding and sleeping bags are not included: bring your own, or hire sleeping bags separately.
100 L + 100 L tanks
Toilet & Shower
A dedicated onboard toilet and shower, both using the 100-litre fresh water tank and the 100-litre wastewater tank — a self-contained system that gives you full bathroom independence, even at basic campsites without shower blocks.
This is a genuine advantage in Iceland: many campsites along the Ring Road, particularly in the East Fjords and the North, have limited or no shower facilities. With the onboard shower, you’re never dependent on campsite facilities.
Self-catering ready
Kitchen
Fully equipped for self-catering:
Fridge: 70 litres — enough for 2–3 days of fresh food, drinks and condiments.
Cooking: hob/range for cooking.
Kitchen kit at pickup: pots, pans, utensils, plates, glasses, cutlery and serving equipment, included at KEF pickup.
Campsite electricity connection: plug into mains hookup for reliable overnight power — charging devices, running the fridge at full efficiency and powering interior lighting.
3 seatbelts
Seating & Living Area
The Benivan 120 seats 3 for travelling, all with proper seatbelts. When parked, the cab’s rotating front seats join the interior living space, creating a comfortable lounge for eating, planning the next day’s route, or simply sitting with Iceland’s landscape outside the window.
When Is the Benivan 120 Motorhome the Right Choice?
Summer Ring Road freedom: The classic use case — drive Iceland’s Ring Road at your own pace, sleeping wherever the day takes you. With Iceland’s campsite network covering virtually every stop on Route 1, you never need to book accommodation in advance or compromise on your itinerary.
Budget-conscious travellers combining transport and accommodation: A motorhome rental replaces both a rental car and accommodation booking — for a summer Ring Road trip of 7 days or more, the combined cost of separate car rental and guesthouse/hotel accommodation typically exceeds a motorhome rental at comparable quality.
Couples and groups of 3 who want total flexibility: No check-in times, no checkout deadlines, no restaurant dependency. Cook when you want, sleep when you want, and move on when the weather or the mood changes.
Travellers who want Iceland’s less-visited campsites: Iceland’s most beautiful camping locations are often the simplest — a flat gravel area near a waterfall, a harbour-side campsite in the East Fjords, a mountain meadow in the North. With onboard toilet and shower, you’re not dependent on facilities at these locations.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
You plan F-road or Highland driving — strictly forbidden. 2WD, significant vehicle length and height. See safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
You are travelling in winter — this is a summer-only product. Iceland’s campsites close in winter and campsite driving in snow and ice in a 6-metre manual 2WD vehicle is not appropriate.
You need more than 3 sleeping spaces — the Benivan 120 sleeps 3. For 4 people sleeping, a second vehicle or alternative accommodation is needed.
You cannot drive a manual transmission — manual only. No automatic version available.
You are under 23 years old — minimum age 23.
You are travelling from a location other than KEF — KEF Airport pickup and return only.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions
Minimum Age: 23 years old.
License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
Transmission: Manual — confident manual gearbox technique required. This is a diesel van-based motorhome, not a car.
Campsite rules: Iceland’s campsite law requires overnight parking only at registered campsites. Wild camping outside designated areas is not permitted.
F-Road Policy: STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Vehicle dimensions, 2WD, and ground clearance make this vehicle unsuitable for F-roads or Highland tracks under any circumstances.
There is a specific quality to Iceland motorhome travel that no combination of rental car and hotel can replicate — the moment you park at a campsite and the landscape outside the window becomes your view for the night. At Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, that view is icebergs floating on still water. At a harbour campsite in Höfn, it’s the Vatnajökull glacier’s edge above the rooftops. In the East Fjords, it’s the narrow fjord reflecting the hillside above. The Benivan 120 puts you inside these moments rather than adjacent to them.
The vehicle itself is a converted Fiat Ducato base — 5.99 metres long, 2.05 metres wide, and 2.65 metres tall. In Iceland’s summer, that size is manageable on the Ring Road’s main paved sections and at Iceland’s established campsites, which are designed to accommodate motorhomes. In Reykjavík’s city streets, the Benivan 120 requires more planning than a compact car; on the Ring Road’s open highway sections, it travels at a relaxed, composed pace that suits the landscape.
The 2.2L diesel manual is the appropriate powertrain for Iceland’s terrain and fuel access — diesel fuel is widely available at filling stations throughout the Ring Road, and the manual gearbox gives the driver direct control on Iceland’s longer downhill sections and at the steeper campsite entrances that occasionally appear on rural routes. The engine braking on descents is a genuine advantage over an automatic for a vehicle of this weight.
Inside, the Benivan 120 is compact but considered — the superior bed at 140 × 186 cm is a proper double, not a compromise. The 70-litre fridge keeps food and drinks genuinely cold. The onboard shower and toilet function as well as a basic guesthouse bathroom. The kitchen kit arrives fully equipped at KEF — you collect the vehicle with everything you need to cook your first meal at the first campsite.
For 7–10 days on Iceland’s Ring Road in summer, this is not a camping experience. It’s self-contained mobile travel with Iceland as your backdrop.
Camping guide
Iceland Campsite Basics
Iceland’s campsite network covers the entire Ring Road — there is at least one established campsite at every significant stop along Route 1, and most are open from May to September. Campsites are generally simple, clean and well-maintained: a flat area to park, bathroom and shower facilities (quality varies), a water fill point, and a wastewater disposal point.
No reservation needed
Most campsites: arrive, find a spot and pay on site.
Peak summer tip
In July, popular campsites near Vík, Jökulsárlón and Þórsmörk fill early evening. Arrive by 18:00 to avoid the late scramble — though campsites rarely turn vehicles away entirely.
tjalda.is lists all registered Icelandic campsites with GPS locations, facilities, prices and real-time occupancy data where available. Download before departure.
What the Benivan 120 needs at a campsite
Electricity hookup · optional
~700–1,000 ISK / night
Most established Ring Road campsites have 230V hookup points — connect for reliable overnight power. Not all campsites include it in the base fee, so expect this extra charge.
Water refill
100 L lasts 2–3 days
Use any campsite water fill point. The 100-litre tank lasts 2–3 days of normal use.
Wastewater disposal
100 L grey water tank
Empty it at any campsite’s grey water disposal point, typically located near the water fill station.
Campsite fee
~2,000–4,000 ISK / person / night
Typical Icelandic campsite pricing in 2026. Prices and facilities vary by location.
Why rent an RV in Iceland with Hertz?
Iceland camper rental with Hertz Iceland means renting from a locally owned operator with over 50 years of experience, operating in Iceland since 1971. We have been recognised as Iceland’s Leading Car Rental Company at the World Travel Awards in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025 — and are proud to be nominated again in 2026.
Transport + Accommodation in One: A motorhome rental combines your Ring Road vehicle and your accommodation into a single daily rate. For a 7–10 day Ring Road loop in summer, the combined savings vs separate car rental and guesthouse/hotel costs can be significant.
Total Itinerary Freedom: No check-in times, no checkout deadlines, no advance accommodation reservations required. Change your itinerary when the weather turns, stay an extra night at Jökulsárlón, leave Vík at 05:00 for the morning light at Reynisfjara — the Benivan 120 makes Iceland’s unpredictability an advantage rather than a problem.
Under 2 Years Old: Every Benivan 120 in our fleet is under 2 years old — current specification in effect.
Fully Equipped: Everything you need to eat, sleep, shower, and cook is included or in the vehicle. Sleeping bags and bedding are the only item to bring or hire separately.
Direct KEF Pickup: Collect from KEF Airport Arrival Hall and drive directly to your first campsite — no transfer, no waiting.
Hertz Iceland: Locally Operated Since 1971

Road Trips with the Benivan 120 Motorhome
The Ring Road is different from a motorhome. You sleep where the day ends, wake up where Iceland left you, and move on when you’re ready. These three itineraries show what that freedom looks like.
The full 1,332 km Ring Road in a motorhome is Iceland’s defining self-drive experience — and the Benivan 120 is designed for exactly this itinerary. Ten days, paved Route 1 throughout, sleeping at a different campsite each night. Day one: South Coast to Vík (campsite at Vík — busy in July, arrive before 18:00). Day three: Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon — park at the campsite and walk to the lagoon at midnight sun in July, when the tour buses have left and the light turns golden. Day five: East Fjords harbour campsites — some of Iceland’s quietest and most beautiful, with the fjord outside the window and almost no other visitors. Day seven: Akureyri and the North. Day nine: return via Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The Benivan 120’s 100-litre fresh water tank, onboard shower, and 70-litre fridge make 10 days of campsite-independent travel genuinely comfortable — not a compromise.
Planning Tip: Download campsites.is before departure. No advance reservations needed for most Icelandic campsites — arrive, find a spot, pay on site. In July, popular campsites at Vík and near Jökulsárlón fill by 19:00. Stick entirely to paved Route 1 — no gravel highland shortcuts for a 6-metre 2WD motorhome.
A tighter 7-day itinerary focused on Iceland’s most spectacular southern half — everything between the Golden Circle and Egilsstaðir, entirely on paved roads. Day one: Golden Circle and overnight near Selfoss. Day two: South Coast to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, overnight at Vík. Day three: Reynisfjara black sand beach in the morning, drive east to Jökulsárlón — park at the glacier lagoon campsite and take the evening boat tour. Day four: Diamond Beach and the drive east into the East Fjords — some of Iceland’s most isolated coastline, with harbour-side campsites that barely register on most Iceland travel itineraries. Return via the Ring Road’s northern loop or reverse the same route. The Benivan 120’s onboard shower means arriving at a basic East Fjords campsite without shower facilities is never a problem — your shower is parked outside.
Best Time: June–August. The East Fjords are less visited than the South Coast — plan the East Fjords section as two nights minimum to experience the pace rather than treating it as a transit section. Check road.is before every departure.
The northern loop — Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Westfjords’ western coast on maintained paved roads, Akureyri, and Mývatn — in 5 days during June or July’s midnight sun. The Benivan 120’s height (2.65 m) means some of the Westfjords’ narrower mountain roads require care, but the main coastal routes are manageable. The midnight sun makes campsite driving irrelevant — in mid-June Iceland has no practical darkness, which means you can drive at 22:00 and wake at 04:00 to an empty Kirkjufell mountain in Grundarfjörður before the day visitors arrive. Mývatn’s campsite has some of Iceland’s best birdwatching from the motorhome window. Return via Akureyri and the Ring Road’s western section. This itinerary rewards flexibility — the motorhome makes spontaneous extensions and detours possible in a way that hotel reservations never do.
Best Time: Mid-June to mid-July for maximum midnight sun. Check road.is for Westfjords mountain road conditions — some passes remain closed until late May. Stick to paved roads throughout — this motorhome is not designed for gravel mountain tracks.
The Benivan 120 rental includes: kitchen kit (pots, pans, utensils, plates, glasses, cutlery) at KEF pickup; onboard toilet and shower; 100L fresh water tank and 100L wastewater tank; 70L fridge; campsite electricity hookup connection; 24/7 roadside emergency support; and standard CDW coverage. Not included: bedding and sleeping bags (bring your own), campsite fees, electricity hookup fees at campsites, and fuel.
The Benivan 120 sleeps 3 persons across two fixed beds: a superior bed (140 × 186 cm) and a bottom bed (130 × 180 cm). The vehicle seats 4 for travelling with full seatbelts. Bedding and sleeping bags are not included — bring your own.
No. The Benivan 120 is a 6-metre, 2WD motorhome and is strictly forbidden on F-roads, Highland tracks, or any route requiring meaningful ground clearance or AWD traction. This vehicle is designed for Iceland’s paved Ring Road and established campsite network only. For F-road eligible vehicles, check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
KEF Airport only. The Benivan 120 is available exclusively at Keflavík International Airport. It is not available from Reykjavík Downtown, Reykjavík Domestic Airport, or any other Hertz Iceland location. Pickup and return at KEF Airport.
Most Icelandic campsites do not require advance booking — arrive, find a spot, and pay on site. In peak July, popular campsites near Vík and Jökulsárlón fill by early evening. Arriving at busy campsites before 18:00 avoids the late scramble. Download campsites.is before departure to locate registered campsites along your route.
The Benivan 120 is 5.99 m long, 2.05 m wide, and 2.65 m tall. These dimensions affect some multi-storey car parks (height restriction), narrower mountain road sections, and campsite pitch planning. On the Ring Road’s main paved sections and at Iceland’s established campsites, the vehicle is fully manageable.
No — wild camping outside registered campsites is not permitted in Iceland. Iceland’s camping regulations require overnight stays at registered campsites. The country’s campsite network is extensive and covers all Ring Road stops, so staying within registered sites is straightforward. Use campsites.is to locate registered campsites along your route.
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. Pay the service fee at the time of any call-out, then bring your receipt when you return the vehicle — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
Hertz Iceland operates safe.hertz.is — a dedicated driving safety hub covering winter driving, F-road guidance, road conditions, and emergency contacts. Available to all travellers in Iceland, not just Hertz customers.
