The VW ID.3 is a compact fully electric automatic car — best suited to 1–2 travellers on summer day trips, Golden Circle runs, and Reykjavík city driving. Estimated real-world range is approximately 250–380 km in Iceland’s conditions, depending on temperature, wind, speed, heating use and driving conditions. Not permitted on F-roads. Minimum age 20. Or-similar booking. Similar vehicles in this category may have slightly different battery capacity, range, charging speed, drivetrain layout and luggage capacity. For the Ring Road or winter driving, we recommend upgrading to a larger EV or PHEV category.
VW ID.3 Electric Rental Iceland: Complete EV Guide
The Volkswagen ID.3 is a fully electric automatic compact car— compact, refined, and ideally suited to Iceland’s most popular paved-road day trips and Reykjavík city driving. For 1–2 travellers who want a zero-emission driving experience on Iceland’s main summer routes, the ID.3 delivers genuine EV performance with DC fast-charging capability and VW’s intuitive interface in a compact footprint that makes Reykjavík parking straightforward.
Honest positioning upfront: the 58 kWh ID.3 typically delivers approximately 250–380 km of real-world range in Iceland, depending on weather, speed, heating use and road conditions — and with Iceland’s charging network less comprehensive than the Tesla Supercharger infrastructure, the Ring Road requires more careful planning than with a longer-range EV. For the Ring Road or winter driving, we recommend upgrading to a larger EV or PHEV category — the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, or any of our PHEV AWD options. The ID.3 is at its best on day trips, city driving, and shorter summer itineraries where the range is genuinely sufficient.

? Hertz Insider Tip
Is the VW ID.3 Good for Driving in Iceland?
Yes — for summer day trips, Reykjavík city driving, and paved-road itineraries within the vehicle’s real-world range. Less suitable for extended Ring Road itineraries or winter driving.
- Real-World Range in Iceland:Approximately 250–380 km in Iceland’s conditions, depending on speed, temperature, wind, HVAC use, battery charge and driving conditions. In warm summer conditions on shorter routes this is comfortable. In cold or winter conditions, range drops further. Always plan charging stops before departure.
- Real-World Space: 385 litres of boot space — fitting 1 large suitcase or 2 smaller soft bags with all seats in use. Suited to 1–2 people travelling light. For 3 or more with full luggage, a larger vehicle is needed.
- DC Fast Charging: The 58 kWh ID.3 typically supports up to 100–120 kW DC charging through a CCS connector, depending on model year. Charging from approximately 5% to 80% takes around 35 minutes under favourable conditions. Actual charging speed depends on charger output, battery temperature and the battery’s current charge level.
- 2WD : The VW ID.3 is rear-wheel drive and does not provide AWD or F-road capability. Because this is an or-similar category, a comparable supplied vehicle may use front-wheel drive, but all vehicles in the category are 2WD.
- Cabin Comfort: The ID.3 provides quiet electric driving, a compact exterior footprint and a modern digital cabin. Infotainment, heated seats, head-up display and other equipment depend on the vehicle’s model year and trim and are not guaranteed in an or-similar booking.
- Safety: The ID.3 includes modern driver-assistance systems, but exact safety and assistance features vary by model year, trim and the similar vehicle supplied. For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is.
Real-World Range by Conditions — VW ID.3 Iceland Guide
| Condition | Estimated Range |
| Summer city driving (Reykjavík) | ~320–380 km |
| Summer highway (90 km/h) | ~280–350 km |
| Autumn/Spring (5–10°C) | ~250–320 km |
| Winter highway (-5°C to -10°C) | ~220–290 km |
| Severe winter (-15°C+) | ~190–260 km |
These estimates use the 58 kWh VW ID.3 as the reference vehicle. Actual range depends on temperature, wind, speed, HVAC use, battery age, driving style and the similar vehicle supplied. Always plan with at least a 20% charging reserve.
When Is the VW ID.3 the Right Choice?
- Summer city and day trip driving (June–August): Reykjavík and shorter paved-road day trips are comfortably within the ID.3’s practical summer range. The Golden Circle may be possible on one full charge in favourable conditions, but South Coast trips to Vík and Snæfellsnes itineraries should include a planned charging option.
- 1–2 travellers travelling light: The ID.3’s 385-litre boot and compact cabin are best appreciated by a couple or solo traveller who wants EV efficiency without the size of a larger SUV.
- Short summer itineraries based in Reykjavík: For travellers spending most of their time in Reykjavík with day trips planned, the ID.3’s range is genuinely sufficient and its compact footprint makes city parking easy.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
- You plan the full Ring Road — an estimated real-world range of approximately 250–380 km means the Ring Road requires planned charging stops, particularly during winter or strong winds. We recommend the Tesla Model Y or a PHEV AWD for the Ring Road.
- You are travelling in winter — 2WD RWD in Icelandic winter conditions with significantly reduced EV range is not recommended. A 4×4 PHEV or AWD EV is the right choice for winter driving. For winter guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
- You plan F-road or Highland driving — strictly forbidden. 2WD only, no AWD. See safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
- You are 3 or more people with full luggage — 385 litres is suited to 1–2 people travelling light.
- You need a guaranteed specific model — or-similar booking.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions

- Drive System: 2WD RWD only — no AWD available.

Inside the VW ID.3
The ID.3 has a clean, screen-focused cabin with a central infotainment display and digital driver information. Screen size, steering-wheel controls, navigation features and head-up-display availability vary by model year and trim and are not guaranteed.
In Reykjavík’s streets, the ID.3 is immediately enjoyable — the instant torque from the rear electric motor makes city driving crisp and responsive, the turning circle is tight enough for the capital’s narrower streets, and the near-silence of electric running gives the cabin a composure that petrol city cars can’t match. The heated seats warm quickly on cold Iceland mornings.
For two people on a summer day trip, the cabin is comfortable and well-appointed. The boot’s 385 litres handles two soft bags and camera gear without difficulty. Rear legroom is adequate for shorter trips — this is a car designed primarily around the front two seats, and it doesn’t pretend otherwise.
Charging is straightforward in Reykjavík — the city’s growing CCS public network and hotel charging options mean the ID.3 typically starts each day with a full or near-full battery when charged overnight. Outside Reykjavík, planning ahead matters more — A Golden Circle trip may be possible without charging in favourable summer conditions, but customers should still identify a backup charger. Longer South Coast journeys should include a planned charging stop.

Coverage is good in and around Reykjavík and on the southern Ring Road; less comprehensive in the East Fjords, Westfjords, and remote northern sections. ID 3 Car Rental FAQ in Iceland
-
What is the real-world range of the VW ID.3 in Iceland?
The 58 kWh VW ID.3 has an official WLTP range of up to approximately 424–425 km, depending on version. In Iceland, customers should plan for approximately 250–380 km of real-world range, depending on temperature, wind, speed, heating use, battery charge and driving conditions. Winter open-road range can fall below 250 km. Always plan with at least a 20% charging reserve and identify a charging location before departure.
-
Is the VW ID.3 suitable for the Ring Road?
The Ring Road is possible in the ID.3 with careful planning, but we recommend upgrading to a larger EV or PHEV category for a more comfortable experience. The estimated real-world range of approximately 250–380 km combined with Iceland’s public CCS network (less comprehensive than the Tesla Supercharger network along the Ring Road) means more frequent, more carefully planned charging stops than with a longer-range vehicle. For the Ring Road, the Tesla Model Y or any of our AWD PHEV options are better suited.
-
Where can I charge the VW ID.3 in Iceland?
The ID.3 uses CCS (Combined Charging System) — compatible with Iceland’s public charging network operated by ON Power, Ísorka, and other providers. CCS chargers are well-distributed in and around Reykjavík and along the southern Ring Road. Coverage is less comprehensive in the East Fjords, Westfjords, and remote northern sections. Depending on model year, the 58 kWh ID.3 typically supports up to 100–120 kW DC charging and takes approximately 35 minutes to charge from around 5% to 80% under favourable conditions. Use the ON Power or Ísorka app to locate chargers before departure — do not rely on finding one en route.
-
Can I drive the VW ID.3 on F-roads?
No. The VW ID.3 is a 2WD vehicle and is strictly forbidden on F-roads and Highland tracks under any circumstances. For F-road eligible vehicles in our fleet, check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
-
Is the VW ID.3 good for winter driving in Iceland?
For city and short-distance winter driving, the ID.3 with winter tyres is manageable — Reykjavík city use and the Reykjanes Peninsula stay within practical range even with winter range reduction. For the Ring Road or longer winter itineraries, we do not recommend the ID.3 — 2WD RWD in icy conditions combined with significantly reduced winter range makes it the wrong vehicle for demanding winter use. A 4×4 PHEV or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended for Iceland winter driving. For guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
-
How much luggage fits in the VW ID.3?
The boot holds 385 litres with all seats in use — fitting 1 large hard-shell suitcase or 2 smaller soft bags. Best suited to 1–2 people travelling light. For 3 or more with full luggage, a larger vehicle is needed.
-
Is the VW ID.3 a guaranteed model?
No — it is rented on an “or similar” basis. If this exact model is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable compact electric car within the same rental category. If you need a guaranteed specific vehicle, see our Guaranteed Model options including the BMW X3, BMW X5, Toyota Land Cruiser 250, Range Rover Sport PHEV, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and Land Rover Defender 130.
-
Does Hertz Iceland offer Roadside Assistance?
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. If you need assistance during your rental, pay the service fee at the time, then bring your receipt when you return the car — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
-
Where can I charge the VW ID.3 while travelling in Iceland?
Hertz Iceland operates safe.hertz.is — a dedicated driving safety hub covering winter driving, F-road guidance, road conditions, and emergency contacts. Available to all travellers in Iceland, not just Hertz customers.
-
Where can I charge the VW ID.3 while travelling in Iceland?
The VW ID.3 uses CCS for DC fast charging and Type 2 for AC charging. You can charge in and around Reykjavík and in towns along Iceland’s main routes, through networks such as ON Power, Ísorka, N1 and e1. Their apps show charger locations, availability and payment options. On travel days, use CCS fast chargers, and use Type 2 chargers at hotels or during longer stops. Hertz includes a Type 2 cable with fully electric rentals, and DC fast chargers have their own attached cables.
-
Is the VW ID.3 a good choice for a couple or small family visiting Iceland?
Yes. The ID.3 is a good option for a couple or small family visiting Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast. It has five seats, an automatic transmission and an estimated real-world range in Iceland of approximately 155-236 miles (250-380 km), depending on weather, speed and heating use. It works best for one or two adults, or two adults with one or two children traveling light. It is 2WD and can’t be driven on F-roads.
-
Is there enough boot space in the VW ID.3 for luggage?
The ID.3 has a 385-liter (13.6 cu ft) trunk, which expands to 1,267 liters (44.7 cu ft) with the rear seats folded. In practice, we estimate room for one large and one small bag, so it may be tight for a family with several hard-shell suitcases.
-
Is the VW ID.3 comfortable for longer drives in Iceland?
Yes, generally. The quiet electric drivetrain, roomy cabin and flat rear floor make the ID.3 comfortable on longer paved-road drives. Its real-world range means longer trips need planned charging stops, especially in winter or strong winds.
-
What is included when I rent a VW ID.3 from Hertz?
A Hertz ID.3 rental includes:
- Automatic transmission, air conditioning and five doors.
- A Type 2 charging cable for public AC charging.
- Unlimited mileage, VAT, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and third-party liability protection.
- Season-appropriate tires.
Iceland’s distance-based road tax is not included in the rental price. It is calculated after your rental from the kilometers you drive, and charged as the government tax plus a Hertz administration fee. Charging costs, optional protection, child seats, additional drivers and Roadside Assistance are extra options. The reservation is for a VW ID.3 or similar, so the exact model is not guaranteed.
