The Dacia Duster 4×4 is one of Iceland’s most popular budget AWD rentals — F-road permitted, manual transmission, available year-round across all 11 Hertz Iceland locations. It’s rented on an “or similar” basis, meaning you’ll receive this model or a comparable AWD 4×4. Minimum age is 20.
Dacia Duster 4×4 Rental in Iceland: Budget AWD SUV Guide
The Dacia Duster 4×4 is one of the most versatile and popular vehicles in the Hertz Iceland fleet — and for good reason. It combines genuine F-road capability, proven year-round reliability, and an affordable daily rate into a compact SUV that handles everything Iceland throws at it: the Ring Road in January, highland F-roads in July, gravel tracks in the Westfjords, and everything in between.
As part of the Hertz Iceland 4×4 fleet, the Duster is the go-to choice for travellers who want real AWD capability without paying a premium price — whether that’s a 5-day self-drive, a full Ring Road loop, or a highland summer expedition into the interior.

? Hertz Insider Tip: “The Duster’s manual gearbox is an advantage in Iceland, not a compromise. On steep highland descents — approaching Landmannalaugar or crossing the Öxi Pass — engine braking in a lower gear gives you far more control than relying on the brakes alone. If you’re comfortable with a manual, this is the better tool for F-road driving.”
Is the Dacia Duster 4×4 Good for Driving in Iceland?
Yes — it’s one of the most capable and practical choices at this price point. The Duster is built specifically for varied terrain, and Iceland’s road network plays to its strengths across every season.
- Real-World Space: Comfortable for 5 passengers, with 3 large suitcases fitting in the boot with seats up. Rear seats fold flat for a fully usable load floor — ideal for hiking gear, camera equipment, or camping supplies if you’re combining this rental with campsite stays.
- F-Road Capability: AWD with Lock mode, good ground clearance, and hill descent control make the Duster genuinely capable on highland F-roads — not just technically permitted but actually built for them. Suitable for summer F-roads including routes to Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk when officially open.
- Winter Performance: AWD with winter tyres makes the Duster a confident year-round vehicle on Iceland’s main roads. One of the few budget rentals that doesn’t require upgrading to a larger SUV for winter driving.
- The Manual Advantage: 6-speed manual transmission gives precise engine braking control on Iceland’s steep highland descents and gravel passes. Also keeps the daily rental rate lower than automatic alternatives.
- Fuel Efficiency: Both petrol and diesel variants are fuel-efficient for long-distance Iceland driving — important on remote routes where fuel stations can be 100+ km apart.
- Safety: ABS, ESP, multiple airbags, and modern stability control as standard throughout.
- Comfort: Heated seats, a powerful heating system, Bluetooth connectivity, USB charging, and a modern infotainment system make long driving days comfortable regardless of outside temperature.
When Is the Dacia Duster the Right Choice?
- Summer (June–August): Peak season for the full Duster experience — F-roads open, highland routes accessible, campsites operational if combining with overnight stays. The most requested vehicle in this category.
- Winter (October–April): Excellent for the Ring Road, Golden Circle, and South Coast with winter tyres fitted. Stay on cleared main roads — F-roads are closed in winter.
- Shoulder Season (May, September): Ring Road and main paved routes fully accessible. Some F-roads open late May — always check road.is.
The Duster Camping is built for budget-conscious travellers, adventure seekers heading to the Highlands, photographers who need to reach remote locations, and anyone who wants genuine AWD capability without paying luxury SUV rates.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
- You need an automatic transmission — the Duster 4×4 is manual only. For an automatic AWD, consider the [[Link to BMW X3]] or [[Link to Dacia Bigster]] if available.
- You need a guaranteed specific model — booked “or similar,” you’ll receive a comparable AWD 4×4 if the Duster is unavailable.
- You’re a group of 5 with large hard-shell suitcases — boot space is generous but not unlimited. Soft bags help.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions
- Minimum Age: 20 years old.
- License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
- Payment: Valid credit card under main renter’s name required.
- F-Road Policy: Permitted (summer only). Always check road.is before entering any F-road — conditions and seasonal opening dates vary each year. Read our Terms & Conditions before driving into Highland areas.
Inside the Dacia Duster
The Dacia Duster’s cabin doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. It’s practical, well-thought-out, and comfortable for the kind of driving Iceland demands — long days, variable weather, and a boot that gets loaded and unloaded at trailheads and campsites as much as hotel car parks.
The driving position is commanding without being oversized, giving you a clear view of the road ahead whether you’re navigating Reykjavík traffic or reading a highland gravel track for obstacles. Heated seats warm up quickly in Iceland’s cold mornings, and the heating system is powerful enough to make the cabin comfortable within minutes of starting in winter temperatures.
Five adults fit genuinely well — rear legroom is reasonable for a compact SUV, and the flat-folding rear seats create a clean load floor when you need the space. The infotainment system handles Bluetooth, navigation, and USB connectivity without complication, and the steering wheel controls keep your hands where they belong on gravel roads.
There’s nothing superfluous here — which is exactly the point. The Duster gives you what you need to drive Iceland confidently and comfortably, at a price that leaves budget for the experiences rather than the vehicle.

Dacia Duster Dimensions, Seating and Luggage For Your Trip

Renting a Dacia Duster in Iceland FAQ
-
Can I drive the Dacia Duster on F-roads in Iceland?
Yes — in summer only. The Dacia Duster 4×4 is permitted on F-roads and Highland tracks including the routes to Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk. F-roads are closed in winter and during periods of poor conditions. Always check road.is for current road status and read our Terms & Conditions before entering Highland areas.
-
Is the Dacia Duster good for winter driving in Iceland?
Yes. The Duster AWD with winter tyres is one of the most capable budget rental options for Iceland’s winter roads. It handles the Ring Road, Golden Circle, and South Coast confidently in snow and ice. F-roads are closed in winter — stay on main cleared roads outside summer months.
-
How much luggage fits in the Dacia Duster?
The Duster fits 3 large suitcases in the boot with all five seats in use (~422 litres). Folding the rear seats flat creates over 1,600 litres of usable load space — ideal for hiking gear, camera equipment, or camping supplies. Soft bags pack more efficiently than hard-shell suitcases if you’re carrying a full load.
-
Is the Dacia Duster a guaranteed model?
No — the Duster is rented on an “or similar” basis. If this exact model is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable AWD manual 4×4 of similar size and capability. You are never downgraded in class. If you need a guaranteed specific vehicle, see our Guaranteed Model options including the BMW X3, BMW X5, Toyota Land Cruiser 250, Range Rover Sport PHEV, and Land Rover Defender 130.
-
Dacia Duster vs Dacia Bigster — which is better for Iceland?
Both are budget AWD manual 4×4s permitted on F-roads. The Duster is more compact — better for solo travellers, couples, and routes with tighter gravel tracks like the Westfjords. The Bigster offers a significantly larger boot (629 vs ~422 litres), best-in-class rear legroom, and more cabin space — the better choice for families or groups carrying serious gear. If luggage is not a constraint, the Duster’s smaller footprint is an advantage on Iceland’s narrower highland tracks.
-
Does Hertz Iceland offer roadside assistance for towing?
Yes. Roadside Assistance covering the towing fee can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day with MAX Coverage. Pay the towing fee at the time of service and bring your receipt on return — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file.
-
How much does a Dacia Duster 4×4 rental in Iceland cost per day?
We can’t guarantee a fixed price, because Dacia Duster 4×4 rates change with the season and the length of your rental. Prices are lowest in the shoulder and low season (September to May) and highest in peak season (June to August), and longer rentals have a lower daily rate. Daily base rates can start from as low as $73 USD with the Pay Now option (excluding extras and taxes). To see the current price for your trip, enter your dates and pickup location in the search widget on hertz.is.
-
Can I drive the Dacia Duster 4×4 on F-roads in the Highlands?
Yes, in summer when F-roads are open. We permit the Dacia Duster 4×4 on officially open F-roads and Highland tracks, but you must check current conditions before you enter. F-roads are closed throughout winter and may stay closed well into early summer. F-road approval doesn’t make every route safe. Stay on marked roads, avoid uncertain river crossings, and remember that river-crossing, water and underbody damage are not covered by any Hertz Iceland protection package.
-
Is the Dacia Duster good for winter driving and Northern Lights trips?
Yes. AWD, good ground clearance and winter tires make the Duster a practical, budget-friendly option for winter trips on maintained routes such as the Ring Road, Golden Circle and South Coast. It also works well for Northern Lights trips. AWD can’t overcome black ice, blizzards, extreme winds or road closures, so always check road and weather conditions before you set off.
-
Is the Dacia Duster comfortable on long drives and gravel roads?
Generally, yes. The Duster has a high driving position, useful ground clearance and seating for five, which suits Ring Road journeys and maintained gravel roads. It is a budget compact SUV, though, so the ride and cabin refinement may feel less comfortable than a larger Sportage, Sorento or Land Cruiser on long, rough sections.
-
Does the Dacia Duster 4×4 come with winter or studded tires?
Yes. Hertz Iceland fits winter tires from November through April at no additional charge. Depending on conditions and availability, these may be studded tires or non-studded friction winter tires. Studded tires are not guaranteed for every rental.
