Toyota Land Cruiser Rental Iceland: Full-Size AWD 4×4 Guide
Toyota Land Cruiser rental in Iceland means choosing one of the most proven 4×4 platforms ever built — a full-size, body-on-frame automatic AWD diesel SUV with genuine highland F-road capability and the kind of mechanical resilience that has made the Land Cruiser a global benchmark for demanding terrain.
This category is rented on an “or similar” basis — you will receive a Land Cruiser (typically 200 series) or a comparable full-size AWD 4×4. It is the more accessible entry point to Iceland Land Cruiser driving compared to the guaranteed-model Land Cruiser 250 — same F-road capability and legendary platform, at a lower daily rate without the guaranteed-model premium.
Not sure which Land Cruiser to choose? The Land Cruiser 250 is a guaranteed specific model (newest generation, 1,656L boot) at a higher rate. This category is or-similar, typically 200 series, at a lower rate — same F-road access, different commitment level.

? Hertz Insider Tip
Is the Toyota Land Cruiser Good for Driving in Iceland?
Yes — it’s one of the most capable and mechanically proven F-road vehicles available in the Hertz Iceland fleet, regardless of generation.
- F-Road & Highland Capability: Body-on-frame construction, full-time 4×4 with low range, substantial ground clearance, and the mechanical resilience that has made the Land Cruiser a benchmark for highland and expedition driving globally. The 200 series is F-road permitted on all Highland tracks in summer — check road.is and safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide before entering.
- Diesel Performance: The 4.5L V8 turbodiesel (200 series) delivers 272 PS and 650 Nm of torque — massive low-revving pulling power that handles Iceland’s highland ascents, steep volcanic gravel descents, and river crossing approaches without strain. The diesel’s long range between fill-ups is an advantage on remote routes where fuel stations can be 100+ km apart.
- Real-World Space: Generous boot space for 5-seat configuration — typically 4+ large suitcases with all seats in use. Exact figures vary by generation and trim, but the Land Cruiser 200’s load-carrying capacity is a class benchmark.
- Winter Performance: Full-time 4×4 and winter tyres make the Land Cruiser one of the most confident winter vehicles in the fleet on Iceland’s main roads and standard gravel routes. F-roads are closed in winter. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
- Safety: The 200 series carries a comprehensive passive and active safety suite including VSC, TRAC, and multi-terrain ABS. For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is.
When Is the Toyota Land Cruiser the Right Choice?
- Summer F-road season (June–August): Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja, Kjölur — all accessible in a Land Cruiser. Same highland access as the Land Cruiser 250 at a lower daily rate, on an or-similar basis.
- Year-Round Ring Road: Comfortable, spacious, and capable in all weather. Full-time 4×4 with winter tyres for winter; full F-road access for summer. Diesel range keeps fuel stops manageable on the full loop.
- Budget-conscious highland travellers: Rent a car Land Cruiser at a lower rate than the guaranteed LC250, with the same F-road access and the same Land Cruiser platform reputation.
- Groups of 2–5 with significant luggage: Large boot, spacious cabin, and full AWD confidence for multi-day highland or Ring Road itineraries.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
- You need a guaranteed specific model — this category is or-similar. If the Land Cruiser is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable large AWD 4×4. For a guaranteed Land Cruiser, see the Land Cruiser 250.
- You want the newest generation — this category typically runs the 200 series, not the current 250 series. The 200 series is mechanically excellent and F-road proven, but it is an older generation vehicle.
- You need PHEV or EV — this is diesel only. For F-road access in a PHEV, the Defender PHEV is the only option.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions
- Minimum Age: 23 years old.
- License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
- Payment: Valid credit card in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
- F-Road Policy: Permitted (summer only). Check road.is before entering Highland areas.
- Important: Driving on unmarked land, beaches, lava fields, or moss outside designated roads is illegal in Iceland.
Inside the Toyota Land Cruiser
The Land Cruiser 200’s cabin is built around the same philosophy that has defined the nameplate for over 70 years — practical, durable, and spacious enough for serious expedition use, with comfort levels that have improved with each generation. The 200 series interior is roomy for five adults with genuinely good headroom and rear legroom, a commanding seating position, and a sense of solidity in every surface that smaller SUVs don’t replicate.
The automatic transmission is smooth and appropriate for Iceland’s varied road surfaces — unhurried on the Ring Road, confident on highland gravel, and composed during the low-speed technical sections of F-road approaches where the driver needs to focus on the track rather than the gearbox. The diesel V8’s torque is most apparent on long highland climbs, where the Land Cruiser rises to meet the ascent without needing to be worked hard.
Multi-terrain electronics, downhill assist, and the 4×4 low range are present and genuinely useful rather than marketing features — on a steep volcanic descent approaching Landmannalaugar or during a shallow river crossing, these systems reduce the driver’s workload and increase the margin for error.
The Iceland Land Cruiser experience is ultimately about confidence — in the vehicle’s ability to handle whatever the terrain presents, and in the platform’s reputation built across decades of global expedition use. The 200 series may not have the newest screens or the latest ADAS suite, but it has something more relevant to Highland driving: a proven track record in exactly the conditions Iceland presents.

Renting a Land Cruiser in Iceland FAQ
-
Can I drive the Toyota Land Cruiser on F-roads in Iceland?
Yes — in summer only. The Toyota Land Cruiser is permitted on all F-roads and Highland tracks. Always check road.is for current road status and safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide to confirm vehicle eligibility before entering Highland areas. F-roads are closed in winter.
-
What’s the difference between this Land Cruiser and the Land Cruiser 250?
The Land Cruiser 250 is a guaranteed model — newest generation, 1,656L boot, requires 2 credit cards, at a higher daily rate. This category is or-similar — typically the Land Cruiser 200 series, at a lower daily rate, requires 1 credit card. Both have the same F-road access and the same Land Cruiser platform reliability. Choose the LC250 if you need a guaranteed specific model and the newest generation. Choose this category for the same highland capability at a more accessible rate.
-
Is this a guaranteed Land Cruiser model?
No — it is rented on an “or similar” basis. If the Land Cruiser is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable large AWD 4×4. If you need a guaranteed Land Cruiser specifically, see the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 guaranteed model.
-
How much luggage fits in the Toyota Land Cruiser?
The Land Cruiser’s boot comfortably fits 4 or more large hard-shell suitcases with all five seats in use. Exact volume varies by generation and trim, but the Land Cruiser 200’s load-carrying capacity is one of the largest in the Hertz Iceland fleet. The flat load floor and wide tailgate make trailhead and campsite loading practical.
-
Is the Toyota Land Cruiser good for winter driving in Iceland?
Yes. Full-time 4×4 with winter tyres makes the Land Cruiser one of the most confident winter vehicles in the fleet on Iceland’s main roads. F-roads are closed in winter regardless of vehicle. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
-
Where can I find driving safety information for Iceland?
Hertz Iceland operates safe.hertz.is — a dedicated driving safety hub covering F-road guidance, winter driving, road conditions, and emergency contacts. The F-road guide confirms vehicle eligibility by category. Available to all travellers in Iceland, not just Hertz customers.
-
Does Hertz Iceland offer Roadside Assistance?
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. If you need assistance during your rental, pay the service fee at the time, then bring your receipt when you return the car — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
-
How many passengers can travel in a Toyota Land Cruiser rental?
The Toyota Land Cruiser or similar category at Hertz Iceland seats five passengers and holds approximately four to five large suitcases.
-
Can I add a child seat or other extras to my Toyota Land Cruiser booking?
Yes. You can add an infant seat, child seat or booster seat during online booking, or request one at pickup, subject to availability. Other extras include GPS, mobile Wi-Fi, additional drivers, protection packages and a luggage trailer. We recommend booking child seats in advance, especially in the summer high season.
-
What do I need to know before returning my Toyota Land Cruiser rental?
Before you return your Land Cruiser:
- Return it to the agreed location by the time stated in your rental agreement.
- Refill the fuel tank unless you purchased prepaid fuel. Remove your belongings and trash.
- Return all keys, documents and rented extras.
- Report any damage or incidents to Hertz.
- Allow time for the return inspection where possible.
For an after-hours return, park in the designated area, lock the vehicle and put the keys in the drop box. You remain responsible for the vehicle until Hertz checks it in.
-
Are there any roads or areas I cannot drive the Toyota Land Cruiser on?
The regular Land Cruiser rental is approved for paved roads, gravel roads and marked F-roads when they are officially open. That makes it suitable for the Ring Road and summer Highland travel (see our vehicle guide).
However, you must NOT drive:
- Off marked roads or tracks.
- On closed roads or seasonally closed F-roads.
- Across beaches, lava fields, protected land or areas reachable only at low tide.
- Anywhere prohibited by road signs or the Hertz rental agreement.
The Land Cruiser is F-road approved, but river-crossing and water damage are not covered by rental protection. Check conditions before every Highland trip, and avoid crossings when the depth, current or riverbed is uncertain.
