Mercedes GLE Hybrid Rental Iceland: Luxury PHEV AWD Guide
Mercedes GLE car rental in Iceland means choosing one of the most technologically advanced luxury PHEVs in the Hertz Iceland fleet. The GLE 450e PHEV combines a 3.0L inline-six petrol engine with a 31.2 kWh battery and integrated electric motor for 381 PS combined output and 99–116 km of WLTP EV range — the second-longest electric range of any PHEV we operate, after the Range Rover Sport.
For travellers looking to hire a Mercedes GLE in Iceland, the 450e delivers a genuinely premium experience on Iceland’s paved main roads — the Ring Road, South Coast, and Golden Circle all served by a vehicle that combines Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment, 4MATIC permanent AWD, and an EV range long enough to cover most daily Iceland driving on electric power alone when charged overnight.
⚠️ Important: The charging cable is not included as standard. Add it during booking at hertz.is. The GLE 450e uses AC charging only at 11 kW — no DC fast charging is available. A full charge takes approximately 3 hours at a compatible Type 2 wallbox.

? Hertz Insider Tip
Is the Mercedes GLE Hybrid Good for Driving in Iceland?
Yes — for Iceland’s paved main roads and premium long-distance itineraries, the Mercedes GLE PHEV offers a genuinely first-class driving experience with outstanding EV range.
- Real-World Space: 630 litres of boot space with all five seats in use — fitting 2–3 large hard-shell suitcases. Note that the PHEV battery placement reduces boot volume compared to the standard GLE. For 4 people with full luggage, soft bags are recommended to maximise flexibility.
- EV Range: 99–116 km WLTP — the second-longest EV range of any PHEV in the Hertz Iceland fleet. Real-world range varies by temperature, speed, and HVAC usage. In Iceland’s cooler temperatures, expect figures closer to the lower end of the WLTP range. This covers the Golden Circle loop’s Reykjavík sections, most South Coast hotel-to-attraction legs, and Reykjavík city driving on electric power alone when charged overnight.
- 4MATIC AWD Performance: Permanent AWD delivers confident, seamless traction on Iceland’s paved and standard gravel surfaces. 381 PS and 750 Nm provide effortless, quiet acceleration in all conditions.
- Charging: 11 kW AC charging only — full charge in approximately 3 hours at a compatible Type 2 wallbox. No DC fast charging is available on this vehicle. Plan around overnight hotel charging rather than mid-route stops.
- Cabin Comfort: MBUX Hyperscreen option, 64-colour ambient lighting, Burmester surround sound, massage seats, and a panoramic sunroof create a genuinely exceptional long-drive cabin. The 9G-Tronic 9-speed automatic and AIRMATIC air suspension (where fitted) keep the ride composed on all of Iceland’s road surfaces.
- Safety: Standard suite includes Active Brake Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Active Parking Assist, and Attention Assist. For a full guide to driving safely in Iceland’s conditions, see safe.hertz.is.
When Is the Mercedes GLE Hybrid the Right Choice?
- Summer (May–September): Ideal for Ring Road itineraries, South Coast day trips, Golden Circle runs, and Snæfellsnes Peninsula — all on paved roads where the GLE’s AWD, long EV range, and premium cabin are best appreciated.
- Winter (October–April): One of the most refined winter paved-road vehicles in the fleet. 4MATIC AWD with winter tyres provides confident traction on Iceland’s main roads in snow and ice. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is. F-roads are closed in winter.
- Business and luxury travellers: Mercedes GLE rental Iceland is the choice when a premium German-engineered cabin and long EV range matter as much as the destination.
⚠️ Not ideal if:
- You plan F-road or Highland driving — the Mercedes GLE PHEV is strictly forbidden on F-roads and Highland tracks. For F-road PHEV access, the Defender PHEV is the only option in our fleet. See safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide.
- You need DC fast charging on the go — the GLE 450e has no DC fast-charging capability. For DC fast charging in a luxury PHEV, the Range Rover Sport PHEV (50 kW DC) is the alternative.
- You are 4 people with hard-shell suitcases — 630 litres with soft bags recommended for four people. For maximum luggage, the Land Cruiser 250 (1,656L) or Range Rover Sport PHEV (1,156L) carry more.
- You need a guaranteed specific model — the GLE is or-similar; you may receive a comparable luxury AWD PHEV if unavailable.
- You cannot present two credit cards at pickup — non-negotiable requirement.
Rental Requirements & Restrictions
- Minimum Age: 25 years old.
- License: Valid driving license held for a minimum of 1 year. IDP required if license is not in Roman script.
- Payment: Two valid credit cards in the main renter’s name required at pickup.
- Charging Cable: Not included — add at booking via hertz.is. AC only, 11 kW.
- F-Road Policy: STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. Not permitted on F-roads or Highland tracks under any circumstances. Permitted on Road 35 (Kjölur) and Road 550 (Kaldidalur) only when conditions are clear and officially open.
Inside the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e
Car hire Mercedes GLE delivers an interior experience that is immediately, unmistakably Mercedes-Benz. The MBUX infotainment system — either the standard dual-screen setup or the full MBUX Hyperscreen depending on trim — spans the dashboard in a curved, edge-to-edge display that manages navigation, climate, vehicle settings, and EV charging status from a single, gesture-responsive interface.
64-colour ambient lighting adapts to the time of day and driving mode — calm blue-greens for electric motorway cruising, warm amber for the MBUX sports display during dynamic driving. Burmester surround sound fills a cabin that, in electric mode on Reykjavík’s streets, is among the quietest vehicles in the entire fleet. The 9-speed automatic transitions seamlessly between EV and petrol power — most drivers don’t notice the switch.
Heated and ventilated front seats, massage function, and a panoramic sunroof are standard on higher trims. Rear passengers sit in genuine comfort on long Ring Road days — the GLE is a full-size SUV in every dimension, not a compact crossover in a luxury wrapper. AIRMATIC air suspension (where fitted) keeps the cabin composed on Iceland’s varied road surfaces, from the smooth tarmac of the Ring Road’s eastern stretch to the occasional gravel approach at major tourist stops.
At 630 litres, the boot is the most practically limited aspect of this vehicle compared to similarly-priced alternatives — the PHEV battery placement reduces load space below what the standard GLE offers. Two to three large suitcases fit comfortably; four people with hard-shell cases should pack soft bags. Everything else about this vehicle is without compromise.

History of Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to 1886, when Karl Benz received the patent for the first true petrol-powered automobile — a three-wheeled vehicle powered by a single-cylinder engine. Gottlieb Daimler developed his own motorised carriage independently the same year, and the two companies eventually merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz AG, the parent company of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Over the following century, Mercedes-Benz established itself as the benchmark for automotive engineering across every segment — from the legendary 300SL Gullwing of the 1950s to the current EQ electric lineup. The GLE, first launched as the M-Class in 1997 and rebranded in 2015, brought Mercedes-Benz’s engineering standards to the full-size SUV segment — combining permanent AWD capability with the interior quality and technology the brand is known for.
The GLE 450e PHEV represents the current convergence of that heritage with electrification — a 140-year engineering lineage applied to the task of delivering over 100 km of electric range in a full-size luxury SUV. Renting a Mercedes GLE hybrid in Iceland means choosing a vehicle with more automotive history behind it than almost any other in our fleet.

Mercedes Benz GLE Plug-in Hybrid Rental FAQ
-
Can I drive the Mercedes GLE PHEV on F-roads?
No. The Mercedes GLE PHEV is strictly forbidden on F-roads and Highland tracks in Iceland. It is permitted on Road 35 (Kjölur) and Road 550 (Kaldidalur) only when conditions are clear and officially open. For F-road PHEV access, the Land Rover Defender PHEV is the only option in our fleet. Check safe.hertz.is/f-road-guide for vehicle eligibility.
-
What is the EV range of the Mercedes GLE hybrid?
The GLE 450e is rated at 99–116 km WLTP on electric power — the second-longest EV range of any PHEV in the Hertz Iceland fleet. Real-world range varies by temperature, speed, and HVAC usage. In Iceland’s cooler temperatures, expect figures closer to the lower end of the WLTP range. The 31.2 kWh battery is the second-largest PHEV battery in our fleet.
-
Is the charging cable included?
No. The charging cable must be added separately during booking at hertz.is. The GLE 450e charges via AC only at 11 kW — a full charge takes approximately 3 hours at a compatible Type 2 wallbox. There is no DC fast-charging capability on this vehicle. Without the cable, the GLE operates as a fully capable petrol AWD.
-
Is the Mercedes GLE a guaranteed model?
No — the GLE is rented on an “or similar” basis. If this exact model is unavailable, you’ll receive a comparable full-size luxury AWD PHEV. If you need a guaranteed specific vehicle in this class, the Range Rover Sport PHEV is available as a guaranteed model in our fleet.
-
How much luggage fits in the Mercedes GLE PHEV?
The GLE 450e boot holds 630 litres with all five seats in use — fitting 2–3 large hard-shell suitcases comfortably. Note that the PHEV battery placement reduces boot volume compared to the standard GLE 450 (825L). For four people with full luggage, soft bags are strongly recommended to maximise packing flexibility.
-
Mercedes GLE PHEV vs Range Rover Sport PHEV — which is better for Iceland?
Both are full-size luxury AWD PHEVs, not F-road permitted, requiring two credit cards at pickup. Key differences: the Range Rover Sport is a guaranteed model, has a larger boot (1,156L vs 630L), faster AC charging (22 kW vs 11 kW), and DC fast-charging (50 kW). The Mercedes GLE is or-similar, has more boot space than most PHEVs outside this comparison, a slightly lower combined output (381 PS vs 510 PS), and carries Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment ecosystem. Choose the Range Rover Sport for guaranteed model certainty, faster charging, and more luggage capacity. Choose the GLE if you prefer Mercedes engineering and the MBUX interface, and are comfortable with the or-similar booking basis.
-
Is the Mercedes GLE good for winter driving in Iceland?
Yes. 4MATIC permanent AWD with winter tyres provides confident traction on Iceland’s main roads in snow and ice. Cold temperatures will reduce EV range below the WLTP figure — pre-condition the battery while plugged in before every winter departure. F-roads are closed in winter. For winter driving guidance, visit safe.hertz.is.
-
Where can I find driving safety information for Iceland?
Hertz Iceland operates safe.hertz.is — a dedicated driving safety hub covering winter driving, F-road guidance, road conditions, and emergency contacts. Available to all travellers in Iceland, not just Hertz customers.
-
Does Hertz Iceland offer Roadside Assistance?
Yes. Roadside Assistance can be added at the rental desk at pickup — not bookable online in advance. It costs 1,990 ISK/day standalone, or 990 ISK/day when added with MAX Coverage. If you need assistance during your rental, pay the service fee at the time, then bring your receipt when you return the car — we’ll refund the covered amount to your card on file. Emergency line: +354 858 0499 (24/7).
-
Mercedes GLE Hybrid vs BMW X5: which is better for an Iceland road trip?
Both are five-seat AWD plug-in hybrid luxury SUVs suited to the Ring Road, South Coast and Golden Circle. Neither is generally permitted on Icelandic F-roads, although Hertz allows both on Roads 35 and 550 when these routes are officially open and conditions permit.
Here is how they compare:
- Seats: both have 5.
- Practical occupancy: the Mercedes GLE is best for 2–4 adults. The BMW X5 is best for 2–4 adults and one child.
- Luggage: the GLE fits 2–3 large suitcases (630 liters / 22.2 cu ft). The X5 fits 3 large suitcases plus 2 small bags.
- Electric range: the GLE has 61–72 miles (99–116 km) WLTP. The X5’s depends on the model supplied.
- Booking: the GLE is booked as “GLE or comparable model”. The BMW X5 is guaranteed.
- Character: the GLE is softer and comfort-focused for touring. The X5 is sportier and more driver-focused.
- F-roads: not allowed for either.
Choose the Mercedes GLE for a comfort-focused trip and a longer published electric range. Choose the BMW X5 for a guaranteed model, sportier handling and slightly more flexible luggage capacity.
-
How many people fit in a Mercedes GLE
The Mercedes GLE seats five people (1 driver + 4 passengers), but Hertz recommends it mainly for two to four adults on longer journeys. Its 630-liter (22.2 cu ft) plug-in hybrid trunk holds approximately two or three large rigid suitcases. Four travelers should use soft bags where possible.
-
What happens if the hybrid battery runs out while driving at iceland?
If the usable electric charge runs out, the GLE automatically continues on its gas engine and operates like a conventional hybrid. You don’t need to stop and recharge, although fuel consumption will be higher than when you charge the battery regularly. The vehicle normally keeps a small energy reserve for hybrid operation, so “zero” on the electric range display doesn’t mean the entire high-voltage battery is physically empty.
-
What driving modes does the Mercedes GLE Hybrid have in Iceland?
Depending on the model and equipment supplied, the GLE plug-in hybrid can offer:
- Electric mode for battery-powered driving.
- Hybrid mode for automatic gas-electric management.
- Battery Hold to save charge for later.
- Comfort for normal, economical touring.
- Sport for sharper responses.
- Individual for personalized settings.
The GLE is rented as “or similar”, so confirm the exact modes and controls when you collect the vehicle.
-
Is the Mercedes GLE safe in Iceland’s strong winds?
The GLE is generally stable in normal Icelandic winds because it is a large, heavy SUV with permanent AWD, electronic stability control and season-appropriate tires. Mercedes’ Crosswind Assist can also brake individual wheels to reduce sideways movement from sudden gusts. Its tall body still catches crosswinds, though, and your driving matters. Slow down, hold the wheel with both hands, avoid sudden corrections and leave a longer following distance. In severe winds or official warnings, postpone your trip, whatever the size or safety technology of your vehicle.
